Summary

This episode’s guest was Ben de Jonge, the director of The Cut. He jokingly commented how his Dutch surname is unpronounceable while introducing himself.

Simon started the episode by asking why The Cut decided to focus on Shopify. Ben answered that there were many reasons behind their decision. The key reasons were that Shopify was robust, scalable and very flexible as an ecommerce platform. It does an excellent job at allowing businesses to manage and sell their products. Shopify is also fully hosted and doesn’t have any hidden costs.

Next, Simon asked Ben what makes a great ecommerce website. Ben answered that it is not easy to create a great ecommerce website. However, there are some places to focus. “An ecommerce website can’t be great if the brand isn’t great.” There needs to be a focused brand message so the visitor can easily understand what the business offers. Making navigation simple is also crucial. Lastly, Ben advised being in a niche area. As Simon added, “the riches are in the niches”.

Simon then asked for tips on how to structure a website. Ben shared his opinion that the structure will differ depending on the business.
